More than 150 local children and a number of local businesses graced the hallowed turf at St Andrew’s Stadium, the home of Birmingham City Football Club, for a charity football day. A host of Premier League legends, including former Blues star, Dele Adebola, supported the fundraising event, which was hosted by Morgan Sindall Construction.
Over £2,550 was raised for three local charities: Our Place Community Hub, Beacon Centre for the Blind, and Kids Need Both Parents.
The day kicked off with an under 9s mini tournament: the Midshire Cup, named after the office technology resellers that produced the match day programme free of charge and donated £800 to the event. The tournament was in support of Our Place Community Hub, a charity providing quality advice services, training, and personal development opportunities to people experiencing hardship.
Following this, there was a coaching session led by Dele Adebola for 15-19 year olds in support of Wolverhampton-based charity, Beacon Centre for the Blind.
The afternoon then saw a series of football-themed events for various age groups to raise funds for the charity Kids Need Both Parents. The organisation offers support to families going through separation and loss.
In addition, children from The Jaffray Centre, Erdington, part of the City of Birmingham School, also took to the pitch to show off their footballing talent.
The day culminated with a match between the Morgan Sindall Tigers and Dele’s Allstars: a squad of ex-professional footballers, including Dele Adebola, Nigel Quashie, Claus Jorgensen and Deon Burton.
The final score was Morgan Sindall Tigers 1 – 10 Dele’s Allstars.
Brian Wiley, senior site manager at Morgan Sindall Construction, said: “There’s been some great football skills on show today and it was fantastic to see the local community so engaged and enjoying the sport.”
“Events such as these are a great opportunity to work with the young people in the community, while supporting good causes and raising awareness of the positive work they do.”
