Morgan Sindall Construction has celebrated the official opening of a new £1 million nursery extension for Ullapool Primary School in Ross and Cromatry, Scottish Highlands.
An official opening was held at the school, which is located on Quay Street, in Ullapool.
The extension accommodates two new state-of-the-art classrooms for children aged three to four. One will be for English medium teaching, with 15 nursery places, and the other for Gaelic medium education with a capacity of 13.
Additional facilities include a new reception area, a work area for staff, a staff room and an ASN (Additional Support Needs) room.
Three new secure play areas have been built externally, with one adjoining each classroom. There is also an additional shared play-park. A canopy will provide cover in inclement weather, whilst outdoor lighting has also been installed.
The scheme has been funded by a combination of the Highland Council’s capital programme and the Scottish Government’s Early Learning and Childcare (ELC) provision, which aims to increase the funding entitlement for Scottish nursery-school children by August 2020.
Attending the opening day were representatives from Morgan Sindall Construction, and the Highland Council’s Area Care and Learning Manager (West), Norma Young.
The main contractor was appointed by the council to deliver the project in April 2019. It was completed successfully in just 26 weeks.
Ian MacDonald, special works manager at Morgan Sindall Construction, said: “We are delighted to celebrate the official opening of the new extension with the Highland Council, teaching staff and pupils. The project is a great example of our ability to deliver additional teaching capacity, efficiently and sustainably.”
Chairman of the Highland Council Education Committee, Councillor John Finlayson, said: “I am delighted at the opening of this fantastic facility that will support the whole school community in so many different ways.
“I am sure everyone in Ullapool and the surrounding area will also be happy to see the completion of this exciting project and everyone involved should be congratulated on reaching the completion stage.”
