Morgan Sindall Construction continues Addenbrooke's upgrades with appointment to refurbish paediatric care units

News |

Morgan Sindall Construction is building on its legacy of work at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, with an appointment to a £2 million project to upgrade and refurbish the hospital’s Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).

The company has delivered a number of transformational projects for the hospital, including a landmark scheme to double the size of its intensive care and high-dependency wards in 2010.

Morgan Sindall also expanded and updated the hospital’s specialist post-natal ward The Lady Mary Ward, in 2015. The works to improve facilities and create more space for patients were largely funded by Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust.

The team has recently been on site delivering a phased programme of upgrades to the electrical and water systems and minor re-modelling in the hospital’s Paediatric Day Unit. Following the successful delivery of this tranche of work at the end of 2017, Morgan Sindall has now been appointed to the final phase to deliver a major programme of upgrades to the hospital’s Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).

The thirteen bed PICU ward cares for sick children who need very close observation from doctors, nurses and other members of the PICU team. Many patients are admitted as emergencies, or transfers from other wards at Addenbrooke's or other hospitals.

The project involves a full electrical upgrade to the ward, including new light fittings, under wiring, and the installation of uninterruptible power supplies – to ensure a continuous supply of electricity in the event of a power cut or other electrical fault. The team has also installed new doors, ceilings, decoration, medical bed head trunking and pendants.

Morgan Sindall’s team has had the opportunity to get to know the hospital community during their time on site, and has donated funds to contribute to the costs of an interactive screen which has been installed in the consulting room, to keep young patients and their siblings entertained while waiting for their consultations.

Bob Ensch, Morgan Sindall’s area director for Cambridge, said: “Morgan Sindall has a longstanding relationship with Addenbrooke’s and we’re pleased and proud to be continuing this association. Our team has worked extremely sensitively around patients undergoing serious medical treatment and will continue to employ the same levels of sensitivity and professionalism as they start the next phase of work at Addenbrooke’s.”

Elsewhere in Cambridge, Morgan Sindall has recently completed work on the new £45 million Science Centre for Anglia Ruskin University. The new world-class centre will enable more science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) students to benefit from state-of-the-art facilities. The centre incorporates a 300-seat lecture theatre adapted for science and a 200-station biosciences laboratory.
