Morgan Sindall Construction marks major milestone at Great Yarmouth Charter Academy

News |

Morgan Sindall Construction has marked a major milestone in the refurbishment and expansion of Great Yarmouth Charter Academy, with a ceremony to celebrate the completion of the building’s steel superstructure.

The project, delivered for the Department for Education (DfE) via the DfE framework, involves the construction of a brand new two-storey science block building comprising of nine new general science labs, three new specialist science labs, two seminar classrooms and two general classrooms. It will also feature a new multi-use games area (MUGA), hard play area and extra space for bicycle and car parking.

Great Yarmouth Charter Academy is part of the Inspiration Trust, a multi-academy trust of academies and free schools in East Anglia. Once complete, the new development will increase the academy’s capacity from 750 to 1,350, and create an additional 150 places for a new cohort of sixth form students.

During the celebratory ceremony, guests were invited to sign the steel, which forms the integral structure of the new building. On completion, the building will boast red facing brick, unifying it with the historic Edwardian buildings on the campus, and helping it withstand the academy’s coastal environment.

Alongside the new build, Morgan Sindall Construction will be demolishing an existing temporary classroom and upgrading the current science labs to provide the academy with additional general teaching spaces, as well as improving the dining hall and creating a new sixth form hub.

Peter Whitmore, managing director for Morgan Sindall Construction in the East, said: “We’re very pleased to be celebrating this milestone in the building programme at Great Yarmouth Charter Academy.
“This is an important project for the academy and will provide school users with outstanding facilities - enriching the learning and teaching experience, and supporting a brand new cohort going into sixth form.
“Morgan Sindall Construction is well-versed in delivering first-class educational facilities across the region, and we look forward to continuing to make good progress on this key expansion which will enhance the facilities available for young people across the region.”

Work at Great Yarmouth Charter Academy is due to complete in November 2020.

A spokesperson for Inspiration Trust said: “The new and upgraded facilities will improve the learning environment for all of our current and future students. We’re proud to see Great Yarmouth Charter Academy going from strength to strength. From the new science building to the school’s ‘good’ Ofsted rating and students’ impressive GCSE results.”

Morgan Sindall Construction is on site delivering a number of key projects across East Anglia, including North Denes Primary School in Great Yarmouth. The scheme, being delivered for Norfolk County Council as part of a county-wide investment to create thousands of new school places in Norfolk, will create a 420-place school for children in the north Great Yarmouth area.
