New £14.2 million building will enable Islington Primary School to double pupil places

News |

Islington Council has appointed Morgan Sindall Construction to expand a primary school in the heart of the borough, in a £14.2 million project.

The project will comprise the construction of a new school building for Tufnell Park Primary School, on Dalmeny Road, which will enable the school to double its capacity from 315 pupils to 630 pupils by 2025.

Tufnell Park is a community school, which has served people living in the area for more than 70 years. The school currently occupies a single-storey building with a separate, purpose-built nursey on the same site.

The new building will feature a bright and spacious interior with light wells reaching up three floors in the main corridors, In addition, a double-height foyer with a glass-fronted library has been designed to give an impressive, inspirational feel to the entrance space.

The library has been designed to create a new ‘heart’ at the centre of the school building. It will be situated near to the main entrance to encourage visitors and the wider community to celebrate learning.

The multi-use games area (MUGA) and halls will be available to both the school and local residents for community use outside of the school day.

The project is expected to complete in Spring 2020.

Richard Dobson, area director at Morgan Sindall’s London office, said: “Tufnell Park is a well-established and much-loved part of a growing community in Islington and we’re delighted to be working together with Islington Council on our third school in the last two years. The new building will enable teachers and staff to continue to deliver an outstanding teaching experience for pupils, ensuring that every child is given the best start to their educational journey.
“Our project team is extremely experienced and adept at delivering high-quality education projects, often working in logistically challenging urban environments across London, and on live sites. We will bring this knowledge to bear on this development, doing our utmost to minimise disruption, engage both school users and the local community and manage the project to a high standard to ensure the journey to completion is a positive one for all stakeholders.
“To this end, we’ve selected an offsite modular system, by Eco Modular, to minimise construction traffic, dust and noise that would typically impact a school and its local community.”
Cllr Joe Caluori, executive member for children, young people and families at Islington Council, said: “Tufnell Park primary school is hugely popular with local families and rightfully so.
“With strong demand for school places here, we wanted to make sure the expanded school would create a high-quality, pleasant and airy learning environment that helps to get the best out of pupils and teachers – and with facilities and spaces that are fit for the future, too. I am already looking forward to taking a tour of the finished building.”

Other key projects Morgan Sindall has recently delivered in the capital include a £70 million scheme to transform Lambeth Town Hall and its civic buildings. The multifaceted Your New Town Hall scheme was delivered for national urban regeneration specialist and Morgan Sindall Group company, Muse Developments, and project partner Lambeth Council. The project involved the comprehensive refurbishment of the Grade II listed Town Hall in Brixton and the construction of a new six-storey energy efficient civic building with a customer centre and council offices.
