Morgan Sindall Construction has successfully completed the final external works at St Nicholas’ Primary School in Bearsden.
It follows the company’s handover of the new £10 million 32,000 sq ft school building in August 2018. Built on the old site of St Andrew’s Primary on Duntocher Road, it has enabled the co-location of the former school and St Joseph’s Primary, in nearby Milngavie.
Since then the old St Andrew’s Primary School building has been demolished, the landscaping completed and the 378 pupils who attend St Nicholas’ now have access to the impressive new outdoor space.
The external works include a MUGA (multi-use games area) pitch, a playchip area with climbing tree, basketball court, a cycle proficiency area and a brand new trim trail to give pupils space to play, learn and take part in sports.
Morgan Sindall Construction delivered the final works ahead of schedule after it was appointed to the project by hub West Scotland for long-standing customer, East Dunbartonshire Council.
St Nicholas’ is the fifth school to be built through the council’s Primary School Improvement Programme (PSIP), which is modernising education provision in the region.
Stuart Parker, Morgan Sindall Construction's managing director for Construction in Scotland, said, "Since delivering the main building last year it's been fantastic to see everyone settled and thriving in their new modern surroundings. Providing safe and engaging environments for children to enjoy physical activity is key to driving up educational attainment, and supporting healthy lifestyles.
"This new play area will only further pupils' ability to succeed, both in and out of the classroom; and we'd like to thank everyone involved for their ongoing collaborative efforts in making this project such a success."
Joint Council Leader, Andrew Polson, said, “St Nicholas’ Primary School is now fully complete, with a cleverly designed playground which enhances the modern, fit-for-purpose school building. Despite the cold weather, the children are thoroughly enjoying getting outside and making great use of the facilities on offer."
Councillor Moody said, “There really is something to interest every child in this new playground with a variety of sports areas, a climbing tree and cycling area. Another feature is the ‘mile a day’ route which is marked out around the playground, allowing the pupils to take part in a daily physical activity. It is a fantastic addition to a great school.”
Iain Marley, Chief Executive, hub West Scotland said, “The external elements complete the creation of an inspiring and high quality learning environment and we are thrilled that pupils and staff have adapted to the new environment and are deriving so many benefits from the investment.
"We are grateful for the outstanding work done by the client team and the hub West partnership team supply chain partners whose talents, hard work and collaboration led to this success.”
Headteacher Charlotte Grogan added, “Both the staff and pupils are absolutely delighted with our outdoor space, it complements our wonderful school building and offers the children outdoor learning opportunities which support the delivery of Curriculum for Excellence. We are looking forward to making good use of all it has to offer!”
