A socially-distanced ribbon cutting ceremony has taken place to mark the opening of the new extended and transformed South Molton Medical Centre in Devon.
The GP practice has undergone a major £3.3 million extension and refurbishment programme to increase its clinical capacity, including eight additional consulting rooms to allow its staff to continue to provide modern healthcare to patients.
The project was delivered by Morgan Sindall Construction and has been jointly-funded by the South Molton Medical Centre Partnership and the NHS England Estates and Technology Transformation Fund. The national funding programme supports GP practices to make improvements to services for local patients, including more modern, expanded facilities and use of new technology.
Morgan Sindall Construction worked collaboratively with the client team to ensure the project was delivered safely and efficiently despite the challenges and restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Brian Rice, area director at Morgan Sindall Construction, said: “This marks the beginning of an exciting new journey for South Molton Medical Centre and we’re proud to have played a role in shaping this next chapter for the practice.
The expansion has provided much-needed additional space and state-of-the-art facilities befitting of a modern day healthcare environment. We hope this significant investment will support South Molton Medical Centre in its mission to continue to deliver the best primary healthcare for the local community it serves.”
Maria Hosegood, practice manager at South Molton Medical Centre, said: “South Molton Medical Centre is delighted to be able to offer our enhanced premises to our patients delivered in amongst these challenging times for both our staff and patients. The light and spacious facility we now occupy has given us additional clinical space for extra staff including our primary care network first care physiotherapist, social prescriber and clinical pharmacist, as well as additional GP rooms. It also provides training rooms for future GPs and practice nurses. Our non-clinical staff also have a fantastic space to work from, with a meeting room, a rest facility and parking.
The finished building has come at a time when it is difficult due to COVID-19 and social distancing to be able to share widely, but please be aware we all look forward to the day we can have a proper open event to share with all our patients and the wider community of South Molton.”
David Wilson Partnership Architects worked on the design of the premises. Ross Hunt, senior architect at the firm, said: “We are delighted to have been involved in this project from inception to completion, working with the client and extended consultant and contractor team to deliver a significant transformation of the existing medical centre.
We hope that the increased facilities, significant access improvements and the light filled interior spaces will benefit both patients and staff alike and aid improvement in health and wellbeing for our community.”
