We've been appointed to the £1.4 million development of Torquay Academy

News

Construction work is to start on the second phase of significant development works to the teaching facilities at Torquay Academy, Devon, following the appointment of the Morgan Sindall Construction team.

The £1.4 million project on behalf of Torbay Council in partnership with TDA, an award-winning provider of business and property services across the South West, will enable the construction of a new classroom block which includes six new classrooms and three dry changing rooms.

Torquay Academy is a non-selective secondary school with a current student capacity of 1,400 pupils. During the first phase of construction works in 2017, Morgan Sindall refurbished two classrooms into state-of-the-art science labs.

The new three-storey building will be constructed from steel framing systems with lightweight internal partitions. The external façade will feature smooth-face brickwork and the upper floors will be clad in fibre cement rainscreen cladding.

Glazed curtain walling will also span the entire length of the new building, linking into the existing school.

The Morgan Sindall Construction team is now on site and the project is expected to complete in August 2018.

Nigel Whelan, area director for Morgan Sindall Construction, said: We are pleased to have been appointed to deliver the second phase of significant development works to the teaching facilities at Torquay Academy.
The new building will provide modern, spacious classrooms and changing facilities for pupils to benefit from and enjoy learning in a first-class teaching environment. We are looking forward to once again working closely with the school and local community and deliver this exciting new addition to the campus.
Clare Talbot, schools capital and planning manager, TDA, said: On behalf of Torbay Council, TDA has appointed Morgan Sindall as contractor to deliver this classroom extension at Torquay Academy.
Torquay Academy is a popular and successful school and the new extension will enable the Academy to continue to improve the teaching and learning experience of children and young people from across Torbay.
Headteacher at Torquay Academy, Steve Margetts, said: I am very pleased to be working with Morgan Sindall Construction again. I am looking forward to having the new classrooms ready on time for our students in September.
